We invite you to join us in Portugal, one of Europe’s oldest countries.

We begin in the riverside city and World Heritage Site of Porto. With postcard-perfect ambience and Old-World charm, Porto is the ideal place to be introduced to the history, traditions, architecture, and culture of Portugal, and a good place for a glass of Port too! Venture out to the heart of the Dao Wine Region, known for its stunning beauty, vineyard-filled valleys, centuries-old palaces, and beautiful manor houses. Settle into a Manor House surrounded by gardens and vineyards and whose traditions date back over 600 years, a perfect place to call home for the next 4 nights! Here we’ll have day excursions visiting villages and traditional towns such as Santar, Barcelos, Braga and Guimaraes, one of the prettiest in Portugal. Connect with locals, learn about their traditions, and indulge in the flavours of the region’s wines and authentic cuisine. Continue to the magnificent Douro Valley, whose landscape and vineyards are inscribed on the list of World Heritage Sites. Enjoy the breathtaking landscapes of the manmade terraces, explore the vineyards, taste the wine and learn about the production of the world-famous Port wine. Embrace the beauty of the wine-growing regions, including the famous “green wines”, sip, taste and learn, before returning to Porto for a farewell dinner.

Portugal shines with culture and history, magnificent architecture, panoramic landscapes and culinary experiences that make each day spent there rich in pleasures.  Share the camaraderie of travelling with a small group of women in this beautiful gem of a country.

Please note that an average/moderate level of fitness is required to enjoy the various activities of this tour. Trip activities include walking, sometimes on uneven ground, climbing stairs and getting on and off buses, boats etc. Participants should acknowledge that the conditions in Portugal are not as advanced as in North America and that transportation vehicles may not always be equipped with seat belts and other passenger restraints. As a courtesy to fellow travellers all Broad Escape tours are considered non-smoking in that smoking will not be permitted during group activities or on board the bus. For your own safety as well as the safety of other passengers and the communities that we visit, we require that all travellers in this journey are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least two weeks prior to departure.

DAY 1 | Monday, September 26
ARRIVE PORTO (D)
*Independent arrival at the Porto Airport

Welcome to the vibrant riverfront city of Porto. Upon arrival meet our private group transfer and check in to our centrally located hotel. In the afternoon enjoy an orientation walk to the historic and the beautifully decorated Stock Market Palace. Gather in the evening for a welcome dinner.

Note: This is a land only tour, however, Broad Escapes will have a designated group flight from Toronto. The group transfer will be based on the recommended group flight arrival time. Private transfers (additional cost) can be arranged for those arriving at a different time/date. Flights from all gateways can be arranged through Broad Escapes.

DAY 2 | Tuesday, September 27 (BL)
PORTO
Porto, a World Heritage Site, is a riverside city with narrow streets, lively traditions, and a fascinating history. The medieval town tumbles down to the river Douro, with tight, twisting streets leading into Renaissance squares and Baroque monuments. Discover Porto with our English-speaking local guide and enjoy a walking tour in the city centre. Learn about the history, old and contemporary architecture and new projects happening in this dynamic place.

Vist the Serralves Foundation, a fine example of early 20th century gardening art and landscape architecture. The afternoon and evening are at leisure to explore at your own pace.

Day 3 | Wednesday, September 28 (BLD)
PORTO – LOUSADA
Departure for Santar, located at the heart of the Dão Wine Region. This small village of 1000 inhabitants is known for its beautiful manor houses and centuries-old palaces. It offers a unique combination of religious and noble architecture, terroir, wonderful natural landscapes and winemaking traditions. Visit the organic vegetables gardens of the local community and enjoy a wine tasting in the manor house. After a traditional lunch, depart for Lousada to check in to our historic Manor House, our home for the next 4 nights! Surrounded by gardens and vineyards and whose traditions date back over 600 years, this is a perfect place to relax while enjoying the sounds of lush nature and the fragrant scents of the gardens. Our dinners here will be highlighted by the authentic cuisine and flavours of the region and local wines.

Day 4 | Thursday, September 29 (BD)
LOUSADA
Today we travel to Barcelos to experience the traditional market (only on Thursdays) before continuing to Braga a city dating back to Roman times, rich in history and baroque architecture. In the afternoon, enjoy the view from the hilltop of Jesus do Monte Sanctuary. Marvel at the spectacular staircase of 170 steps of this Christian pilgrimage site. Return to the Manor House with time to relax before dinner.

day 5 | Friday, September 30 (BD)
LOUSADA
This morning departure for Guimarães, one of the prettiest villages of Portugal, and explore by foot. Glimmering with artistic and historic treasures, this medieval town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Return to the Manor House with time to relax before dinner.

Day 6 | Saturday, October 1 (BD)
LOUSADA
Today we travel to Ponte de Lima and Ponte da Barca two lovely towns teeming with traditions and crafts. Here we’ll visit Casa da Aurora, a private manor house and meet the daughter of the Count of Aurora to learn about the history and stories of this historical site. Return to the Manor House for a group activity followed by a delicious dinner with local wines.

Day 7 | Sunday, October 2 (BD)
LOUSADA – DOURO VALLEY
Today we depart for Douro Valley, the first demarcated wine region of the world. On route stop at the lovely town of Amarante, home to the first Portuguese modernist painter Amadeo Sousa Cardoso. Continue to Mateus Palace, the most extraordinary baroque house in the whole of Europe designed by Italian-born architect Nasoni. Continue to Lamego and check in to our Quinta and home for the next 3 nights. Relax by the pool or take part in some activities before dinner at the Quinta.

Day 8 | Monday, October 3 (BD)
DOURO VALLEY
Explore the magnificent Douro Valley, whose landscape of vineyards is inscribed on the list of World Heritage Sites. Here our exploration continues with a boat trip – on a traditional rabelo – that lazily transports us through a vision of steep slopes covered in vines and punctuated by cypresses, all part of a landscape of manmade terraces. It is breathtaking! Enjoy free time in Pinhão. Later visit a local Quinta and marvel at the dazzling views over the valley before a tour of the vineyards and cellars followed by a tasting of the wonderful wines. Return to the Quinta for dinner.

Day 9 | Tuesday, October 4 (BLD)
DOURO VALLEY
Visit the charming town Lamego whose origins dates back the 12th century. Explore the treasures of this singular town and continue to Sõa João de Tarouca, the first Cistercian monastery in the region built int the 12th century. Stop at the champagne factory of Murganheira for a visit of these impressive caves and a “bubbling” tasting. Later, in the village of Bertiandes we will be welcomed at Casa de Santo António. Ana Maria will invite you to the spectacular granite kitchen and observe the ladies of the house preparing the regional dishes. Later we visit two wine-growing villages Salzedas and then Ucanha famous for its unique towered bridge. Return to the Quinta to relax before dinner.

Day 10 | Wednesday, October 5 (BD)
DOURO VALLEY – PORTO
This morning we return to Porto with a stop at Quinta da Aveleda. Here we will visit the romantic gardens and enjoy a wine tasting of their famous “green wines” paired with cheese. Continue to Porto and enjoy an afternoon at leisure. Gather this evening for a traditional Port wine tasting followed by a farewell dinner to reminisce with fellow BE travellers about the memories and experiences we have shared in Portugal.

Day 11 | Thursday, October 6 (B)
DEPARTURE
Departure day. Private transfer to the Oporto airport.

*Broad Escapes will have a designated group flight to Toronto. The group transfer will be based on the designated group flight departure time. Private transfers (at an additional cost) can be arranged for those departing at a different date/time.

**While it is our intention to adhere to the itinerary described above, there is a certain amount of flexibility built into the tour. Due to traffic or other circumstances beyond our control, it may be necessary or desirable to make alterations. Broad Escapes reserves the right to change the itinerary when deemed necessary.**
